Urban patio revitalization
Challenge — Create an inviting gathering place from a patchwork of concrete, asphalt and stone.
The family rarely used the unwelcoming patio, which overlooks a leafy lot in a dense neighborhood. Surrounded by old asphalt and broken concrete, the bluestone patio was lost in an undefined space. With a limited budget, the owners could not afford to completely rebuild the patio.
Budget: $3,500
Approach – Focus on high-quality materials to add texture and order to the space.
Brainstorm construction options that would keep intact structural elements, including stairs and a retaining wall.
Evaluate characteristics of different materials and features for their durability and ability to infuse warmth and order to the patio.
Solution – Offset hard materials with wood and planters to warm and define the space.
We created three distinct spaces out of one: the main lower patio, an upper deck and a transition area between the driveway and the patio.
We used bluestone pavers and gravel to create a walkway between the patio and the driveway, and covered the deteriorated landing with rich mahogany decking that doubles as a seating area. Planters add structure and infuse organic texture.
We added a fire pit, string lights and a teak lounge sofa to conjure an inviting space for the family to gather.
