1970s bathroom do-over

Challenge – Turn a dated bathroom into a spa-like environment.

The owners had a 1970s-era bathroom with light blue floor-to-ceiling tile. The space was good-sized but felt constrictive, as it was dark and filled with busy patterns.

Budget: $27,000

Approach – Use design features to create more openness and a connection to nature.

  • Bring light and air into the space.

  • Take advantage of views to tall and dramatic trees through the shower window.

  • Use materials embedded in nature for a calming effect.

Solution – Update with simple, neutral materials and add a vaulted ceiling and skylight.

  • We prioritized vaulting the ceiling and adding an electric skylight, as those changes would have the most impact on the look and feel of the room.

  • We used deep-olive floor tile, ocean-green wall paint, a wood vanity and honeycomb shower tile for a mix of graphical elements based in nature.

  • We added driftwood and live plants to further warm the space and reflect nature.
