1970s bathroom do-over
Challenge – Turn a dated bathroom into a spa-like environment.
The owners had a 1970s-era bathroom with light blue floor-to-ceiling tile. The space was good-sized but felt constrictive, as it was dark and filled with busy patterns.
Budget: $27,000
Approach – Use design features to create more openness and a connection to nature.
Bring light and air into the space.
Take advantage of views to tall and dramatic trees through the shower window.
Use materials embedded in nature for a calming effect.
Solution – Update with simple, neutral materials and add a vaulted ceiling and skylight.
We prioritized vaulting the ceiling and adding an electric skylight, as those changes would have the most impact on the look and feel of the room.
We used deep-olive floor tile, ocean-green wall paint, a wood vanity and honeycomb shower tile for a mix of graphical elements based in nature.
We added driftwood and live plants to further warm the space and reflect nature.
